CREATING THE SOLUTION

The Importance of Balancing Knee Ligaments

In total knee replacement, treatment of the soft tissues is as important as implanting a prosthetic. In fact, handling of the ligaments, which surround the knee joint, ultimately determines the success or failure of the operation in restoring full range of motion to the patient. Currently, soft tissue balance is done by hand, relying on the surgeon’s “feel” and experience level. Poorly handled soft tissue balancing can lead to a range of problems for patients such as instability, pain, buckling, and failure of the knee implant. There is a need for precision in the crucial task of restoring health and balance to the soft tissues of the knee. HighLight Orthopedics was founded to discover and develop a solution.

The Benefits for Total Knee Replacement

More than 700,000 total knee replacements are performed in the U.S. each year, a number that it is projected to grow to 2.3 million (6,300 procedures a day) by 2030. Implant failure due to poorly handled ligament balancing leads to 20% of revision (redone) surgeries. Revisions add more than $2.7 billion to the economic burden of our health care system every year. A simple, repeatable, cost-effective way to balance ligaments can help improve the outcomes of knee replacements and reduce this economic burden.

Product Development With the Changing Healthcare Market in Mind.

DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT

HighLight Orthopedics was founded to efficiently develop products without adding cost to the system. Our aim is to take smart ideas and turn them into smart products to improve orthopedic procedures.
